31/12/2021

On the morning of December 31, 2021, the Business Research Institute attended the international workshop titled “Recovery and Development of Business Production in the Mekong Delta Region Post-COVID-19,” organized by Can Tho University.

The workshop featured discussions from various scholars, including a presentation by MSc. Nguyen Phan Truc Phuong, representing the research group from the Business Research Institute. The presentation focused on “Financial Solutions to Support the Recovery of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in the Mekong Delta Region After COVID-19.” The key topics addressed in the presentation included:

  • The Mekong Delta in the Southern Economic Development Strategy:

    • Its advantageous geographic location and favorable climate make the Mekong Delta one of Vietnam's key economic regions. The area serves as the country's largest rice granary and plays a crucial role in national food security. However, the severe impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic have hindered the region's development.
  • Challenges and Consequences of COVID-19 for SMEs in the Mekong Delta:

    • The pandemic has posed numerous challenges for SMEs, including disruptions in raw material supplies and supply chains, decreased import-export activities, rising production costs, labor shortages, and difficulties in accessing financial support policies.
  • Financial Solutions to Support SMEs in Returning to the "New Normal":

    • The research group proposed several appropriate financial solutions to assist SMEs in the Mekong Delta in restoring their business activities, including:
      • Providing capital and preferential interest rates for SMEs.
      • Designing credit support packages tailored to specific industries.
      • Restructuring debts.
      • Reducing or exempting value-added tax (VAT) and corporate income tax (CIT).
      • Ensuring welfare and social security for citizens and workers.
      • Promoting public investment disbursement to improve regional transportation infrastructure and enhance investment in projects that leverage the region's status as the country's top rice granary.
